The myth
The most famous moment of Momotarō's tale is the landing on the Island of Demons with his three companions. Each uses his gift: the pheasant flies over the gate and distracts the oni, the monkey climbs the wall and opens the door, and the dog bites the enemies' legs while Momotarō fights with his sword. The oni surrender, promise never again to raid the villages and hand over their stolen treasure, which the hero carries home to his old parents. The tale was set down in Edo-period picture books and taught to generations of Japanese children.
Why it has this power
