The myth

Tomoe Gozen was a warrior of the late twelfth century who appears in the Heike Monogatari, the great epic of the Genpei War. She served Kiso no Yoshinaka, cousin and rival of Minamoto no Yoritomo. The text describes her as beautiful, a mighty archer, a fearless rider and a swordswoman "worth a thousand", ready to face gods or demons. At the battle of Awazu in 1184, with Yoshinaka already defeated, she is said to have brought down one more enemy warrior before obeying the order to leave. Her later fate is uncertain, and legends say she became a nun.
