The myth
Medea, granddaughter of the Sun, fled Corinth in a chariot drawn by winged serpents. In Euripides' tragedy Medea, staged in 431 BCE, she appears aloft in a chariot given by Helios, her grandfather, after her terrible revenge on Jason. Later authors such as Ovid and Apollodorus clearly describe winged dragons pulling the chariot, on which she also flew across Greece gathering magic herbs to rejuvenate Aeson, Jason's father. In Greek art, especially on South Italian vases, the serpents of Medea's chariot became a famous image.
