The myth

This card portrays a real image from the Book of the Dead: the divine cat who slays Apophis. In her association with Mau, the great cat, the goddess Bastet sometimes appears destroying the enemy of Ra by cutting off the serpent's head with a knife held in her paw. World History Encyclopedia notes that the cat in the vignettes is also identified as Bastet or Mafdet, goddess of swift justice. Since Apophis never died for good, the fight repeated every night, just as the card's flavor text says.

Why it has this power

A rare level 7 Beast of Light with 2300 ATK and 2000 DEF, obtained only by fusion: Sacred Temple Cat plus any Serpent, like the cat overcoming the serpent. Sun beats Moon; Scarab beats Leviathan, the constellation of the chaos serpents, just as the knife overcomes Apophis.

Did you know

The image of a cat with a knife beheading the serpent appears in Book of the Dead vignettes and in tomb paintings.
