The myth

The quetzal’s green plumes, quetzalli, were the noblest material of Mexica featherwork. The amanteca, the feather artisans, turned them into headdresses, shields, fans and mantles for gods and rulers. Green and shining like young maize and water, the plumes stood for fertility and wealth, and gave their name to the god Quetzalcóatl, the serpent joining earth and sky. The “Ancestral Quetzal” is the game’s creation: a primordial bird whose feathers give birth to breezes, as if each plume held a breath of Ehécatl.

Why it has this power

A Level 7 Rare with 2300 ATK and 2000 DEF: far stronger than the Canopy Quetzal, as the ancestor of the whole species. Wind, Feather and Crown are the very marks of Quetzalcóatl. Not by chance: fused with Ehécatl, Lord of the Wind, this bird forms the Feathered Serpent, the deck’s Legendary.

The famous headdress attributed to Moctezuma, now in Vienna’s Weltmuseum, holds hundreds of quetzal feathers.
