The myth

The Curupira's most famous mark, as the forest guardian recorded by Anchieta as early as 1560, is his backward-facing feet. Whoever finds his tracks and tries to follow them walks the opposite way from where he went and ends up lost, going in circles in the forest. In the stories, this is how he protects trees and animals from disrespectful hunters and woodcutters: he does not need to fight, only to confuse. Folk advice for the lost includes making a ball of vine and throwing it behind you, or offering tobacco. The MYTHENOR spell turns this trick into protection in the duel.

Why it has this power

An uncommon protection spell: for one turn, the opponent cannot attack. It is the effect of the backward tracks: the enemy walks and walks, and returns exactly where they started. Use it when you need time to set up a fusion, call a ritual or recover your breath.

The scientist Barbosa Rodrigues published accounts of the Curupira in 1890, collected in the Amazon.
