The myth
The Mapinguari is the hairy giant of the Amazon forests, reported above all in Acre, Amazonas and Pará. Folk descriptions speak of a single eye on the forehead, a huge mouth in the belly, feet sometimes turned backward, and a strong smell that announces its arrival. Its hide is said to stop bullets except near the navel. In some Indigenous accounts it is an elder or a former shaman who was transformed. In the 1990s the ornithologist David Oren, of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, suggested the myth might preserve a memory of extinct giant ground sloths.
Why it has this power
Level 10, ATK 3500 and DEF 3300: the highest defense in the region, like the hide that bullets cannot pierce. It is an earth Beast, heavy and unhurried. Sun and Bull speak of raw strength in the open. It is an ancient rhyme: fusing the Ancestral Giant Sloth with the Caipora joins the scientific hypothesis to the keeper of the beasts.
Did you know
Oren suggested the "backward feet" might come from the tracks of ground sloths, which walked on the sides of their feet.
