The myth
Iðunn's apples are the food that keeps the gods young. Snorri says the goddess keeps them in an ash-wood box, and whenever the gods begin to age they need only eat them to become young again, and so it will be until Ragnarök. The myth of her abduction shows how much they depend on them: without Iðunn, carried off by the giant Þjazi, the gods soon grow grey and wrinkled, and they force Loki to bring her back. It is one of the rare Norse images of an immortality that must be tended and renewed.
Why it has this power
A Common spell that heals 800 points of breath, that is, life. It does exactly what the apples do in myth: restore lost vigor and roll the centuries back. Simple and reliable, it pairs with Iðunn and with the Golden Apple Tree.
Did you know
In the Eddas, the word epli could refer to various fruits, and some scholars debate whether Iðunn's apples were really apples.
