The myth
Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, sister of Fenrir and the Midgard Serpent. According to Snorri, Odin cast her into Niflheim and gave her power over a realm where she receives those who die of sickness or old age, the dead without battle glory. Her hall is called Éljúðnir; Snorri even names her plate, Hunger, and her knife, Famine. She is half dark blue and half flesh-colored, grim to look upon. When the gods asked for Baldr back, Hel set the condition that all things must weep for him.
Why it has this power
A level 8 Epic with ATK 2800 and DEF 2900: half living, half dead, sturdier than she is aggressive. A Darkness Undead, under Moon and Scarab. She is a ritual monster: the Rite of the Gjallar Bridge offers the Draugr, the Naglfar Oarsman and the Helhest, three dead who cross the bridge to call their queen.
Did you know
The name Hel, for both realm and goddess, comes from a Germanic root meaning to hide, the same as English hell.
