Kiyohime, Dragon of Jealousy

The myth

Kiyohime is the tragic heroine of the legend of Anchin and Kiyohime, tied to Dōjōji temple in Wakayama and recorded as early as Buddhist collections of the Heian period. The young monk Anchin, on his way to Kumano, promised to return to her but fled. Betrayed, Kiyohime pursued him and, crossing the Hidaka River, turned into a great serpent. Anchin hid beneath Dōjōji's bell; the serpent coiled around it and the fire of her rage melted the bronze, killing the monk. The story inspired the Noh play Dōjōji and famous kabuki dances.

Why it has this power

An Uncommon level-6 Fire Dragon with 2200 ATK and 1700 DEF: pure passion, hitting hard and guarding little. Fire is the heat that melted the bell; Sun and Crown recall the daughter of an important household she was. In the earthly cycle Crown beats Scarab, good against the undead.

Did you know

Dōjōji still stands and displays illustrated scrolls of the legend; the bell recast afterwards was carried off as war booty in the sixteenth century and now hangs at Myōman-ji temple in Kyoto.
