The myth

Mizuchi is an ancient water serpent-dragon mentioned in the Nihon Shoki. In the reign of Emperor Nintoku, a mizuchi lived in a pool of the Kawashima River in Kibi and poisoned passers-by. The hero Agatamori threw gourds into the water and challenged it: if the monster could sink them he would withdraw; if not, he would kill it. The mizuchi turned into a deer and tried, but the gourds would not sink, and Agatamori plunged in and slew it with his sword. The name is read as "lord of the water" and ties to river kami who demanded offerings, sometimes terrible, before letting anyone pass.

Why it has this power

An Uncommon level-5 Water Dragon with 1800 ATK and 1600 DEF: a solid guardian of the rapids, strong enough to demand a toll. Moon and Leviathan tie it to deep waters and to Ryūjin. With the Tide Jewel it grows another 700 points, like a river in flood.

Did you know

The Nihon Shoki tells another gourd trick: a man threw two into a river saying that if the god sank them he would give himself up; they floated, and he escaped being sacrificed.
