The myth
There is no well-dragon hatchling by this name in folklore: it is a MYTHENOR creation. But the idea has real roots. In Japan, suijin, the water kami, are revered at household wells, springs and irrigation dikes, because water decides the rice harvest. Serpents, dragons and kappa are seen as forms of these kami, dangerous yet able to bring blessings. Villages held rain prayers, amagoi, at ponds and wells believed to be dragons' homes. The card imagines one of these guardians while still small, trading rain for rice.
Why it has this power
A Common level-2 Water Dragon with 700 ATK and 800 DEF: a hatchling, better at guarding the well than attacking. It shares Ryūjin's Moon and Leviathan constellations, the family of tides and deep waters. It works as cheap material and grows stronger with the Tide Jewel, which favors dragons and serpents.
Did you know
In many old Japanese homes the well received offerings at New Year, and sealing it without a rite of thanks was considered disrespectful to the water kami.
