The myth

Susanoo, "the impetuous", was born from Izanagi's nose and given rule over the sea, but he wept for his dead mother and was banished. Visiting his sister Amaterasu in heaven, he wrecked rice fields and defiled the sacred hall, driving her to hide in the cave; the gods cast him out again. In the land of Izumo he saved the maiden Kushinada-hime from the eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi, making it drunk on sake and cutting it to pieces. In the monster's tail he found the sword Kusanagi, which he offered to his sister. Linked to wind, rain and storms, he is revered at Izumo and at shrines such as Kyoto's Yasaka.

Why it has this power

A Legendary level-10 Thunder Deity with 3600 ATK, the highest attack in the archipelago, and 2700 DEF: all fury and little patience, like the god who wrecked heaven's rice fields. Wisp and Crown recall the wandering lightning and his divine blood. Equipped with Kusanagi, the sword he pulled from the serpent's tail, he becomes even more fearsome.

Did you know

Susanoo's poem about the "eightfold clouds" of Izumo, recorded in the Kojiki, is traditionally called the first waka, the first Japanese poem.
