The myth

In the Metamorphoses, Ovid tells of Orpheus's descent into the land of the dead. At the sound of his lyre, Tantalus forgot his thirst, Ixion's wheel stood still, Sisyphus sat on his stone and the Furies wept for the first time. Hades and Persephone agreed that Eurydice could return, on condition that Orpheus not look back until he had left the valley. Close to the light, afraid she was not following and longing to see her, Orpheus turned. Eurydice was drawn back, saying a farewell he barely heard, and died a second time.
