Etna Drakon Hatchling
Inspired by: The drakones, the great Greek serpent-dragons, and Etna, the Sicilian volcano under which, according to Aeschylus, Typhon lay while Hephaestus hammered at his forge.

Hatched in the volcano's heat, it already spits smoke.

The myth
There is no dragon hatchling of Etna in Greek myth: it is a MYTHENOR creation. But the volcano had a mythic reputation. In Prometheus Bound, Aeschylus says that Typhon, the monster defeated by Zeus, lies crushed beneath Etna and that rivers of fire will still burst from it; on the summit, Hephaestus works red-hot iron. The Greeks called drakon the giant serpents that guarded springs, treasures and sacred groves, many of them offspring of Typhon. The card imagines a young one of that lineage, hatched in the mountain's heat.
Why it has this power
A Common level-3 card with 900 ATK and 700 DEF: it is only a hatchling, strong enough to open a game and little more. A Fire Dragon for the volcano, it carries the Sun and Leviathan constellations, the heat and the giant serpent it will one day become. It works as cheap material for free Dragon rhymes.
Did you know
Greeks explained Etna's eruptions as the fire of the imprisoned Typhon or as the furnaces of Hephaestus and the Cyclopes.
