The myth

The milpa is the Mesoamerican farming system in which maize, beans and squash grow together in one field: maize supports the beans, beans enrich the soil, and squash shades the ground and keeps it moist. Among the Mexica, lake chinampas and hillside plots produced the harvests that fed Tenochtitlan. Calendar festivals followed the plant’s growth, from blessed seeds to ripe ears. The milpa is still alive in Mexico and remains the farming heritage of many communities. The walking cornfield is the game’s imagination.

Why it has this power

A Level 4 Common with 900 ATK and 1300 DEF: a whole field that protects more than it attacks. Light and Sun are the warmth that makes maize rise; Scarab, the cycle of sowing and harvest. Fused with the Young Maize Spirit, it gives birth to Centéotl, the Young Maize God.

The word milpa comes from Nahuatl milli, “cultivated field,” and pan, “upon.”
