The myth
The hummingbird, huitzilin in Nahuatl, was far more than a pretty bird to the Mexica. Their patron god, Huitzilopochtli, carries the hummingbird in his name, usually translated as “Hummingbird of the South” or “Left-Handed Hummingbird.” The Florentine Codex says that fallen warriors, after four years escorting the sun, returned to earth as hummingbirds and butterflies to sip nectar from flowers. The hummingbird’s fierceness, defending its territory against larger birds, made it a model of the small, brave warrior.
Why it has this power
A Level 2 Common with 700 ATK and 500 DEF: truly small. Yet Fire, Feather and Crown tie it to the sun and to the god whose name it bears. Its value is ritual: it is a material for the Rite of the New Fire, which calls Huitzilopochtli, and fused with the Fallen Warrior of the Flowery Field it becomes the Hummingbird of the Reborn Warrior.
Did you know
The Mexica believed the hummingbird “died” in the dry season and came back to life with the rains, linking it to renewal.
