The myth
Tenochtitlan was founded around 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco, in the Valley of Mexico. Causeways linked the city to the shore and canals crossed it, carrying thousands of canoes loaded with people, tribute and goods. All around, chinampas — farming islands built from mud and anchored by willows — grew maize, beans, squash and flowers. Today the lake has almost vanished beneath Mexico City, but the chinampas of Xochimilco are still farmed. The serpent that counts boats is the game’s creation.
Why it has this power
A Level 3 Common with 1200 ATK and 1100 DEF: the strongest Common serpent, as it swims through an entire city. Water is the lake; Moon and Leviathan evoke night over the water and its serpent body. It is a material for the Rite of the Rain Jars, which calls Tláloc, lord of the valley’s waters.
Did you know
Lake Texcoco’s water was brackish; a dike built under Nezahualcóyotl separated the fresher water around Tenochtitlan.
