The myth

The rattlesnake is the most depicted serpent in Mexica art: the Feathered Serpent has a rattle, the heads surrounding the Templo Mayor are rattlesnakes, and Coatlicue’s skirt is woven from them. Coatl, “serpent,” was also the fifth day sign of the ritual calendar. Jade, chalchihuitl, stood for water, life and all that is precious; a jade bead was placed in the mouths of noble dead. The game unites both symbols in a rattlesnake with a green-stone rattle.

Why it has this power

A Level 3 Common with 1100 ATK and 900 DEF: a quick warning and a firm bite. Earth is the ground it crawls on; Sun and Leviathan tie it to daylight and to serpents. It is a material for the Rite of the Serpent Skirt, which calls Coatlicue — the rattlesnake that becomes a thread of the goddess’s skirt.

Did you know

At the Templo Mayor, dozens of stone serpent heads marked the stairways and the wall around the sacred precinct.
