The myth
The staff was the emblem of the völva, the Viking Age seeress; the very name völva comes from vǫlr, staff. In the Saga of Erik the Red, the seeress Þorbjörg carries a staff with a brass knob set with stones. Archaeology confirms it: in women's graves across Scandinavia, such as those at Fyrkat in Denmark and Birka in Sweden, iron staffs have been found that scholars interpret as seiðr staffs. How they were used is still debated, perhaps to induce trance or as a sign of authority.
Why it has this power
An Uncommon equipment that grants 700 ATK and DEF to a Spellcaster or Spirit. The iron sings to those who know how to listen, the card says. With it the Völva, the Norns, Gullveig, the Nøkken and the Huldra become far more dangerous: it is the weapon of those who fight with knowledge.
Did you know
Some iron staffs found in Viking graves resemble distaffs, linking magic with the act of spinning fate.
