The myth
Yggdrasil has three roots. According to Snorri, one reaches the Æsir, where Urðr's well and the Norns are; another goes to the frost giants, where Mímir's well, the source of wisdom, lies; the third stands over Niflheim, with the spring Hvergelmir, where Níðhöggr gnaws. Grímnismál gives another version: under one root lies Hel, under another the giants, under the third mankind. The sources describe the roots, not a root with a will of its own. The Living Root is a MYTHENOR creation: one of those roots, awakened.
Why it has this power
A level 6 Uncommon with ATK 1400 and DEF 2000: a root holds more than it strikes. An Earth Insect-Plant, under Feather and Scarab. It is the centerpiece of the Rite of the Nine Roots: with Ratatoskr and the Bark-Beetle, it calls Yggdrasil Awakened, an Epic with DEF 3000.
Did you know
Snorri says the gods meet in council every day beside Urðr's well, beneath one of the roots.
