The myth
Slain by the mistletoe, Baldr was carried to the ship Hringhorni for his funeral. It was so heavy that only the giantess Hyrrokkin, riding a wolf with serpents for reins, could push it into the sea. His wife Nanna died of grief and was laid on the pyre with him, and Odin placed the ring Draupnir there. Baldr went to Hel's realm, and the world did not weep enough to bring him back. But the Völuspá promises that after Ragnarök the fields will bear unsown, and Baldr will return to the renewed world.
