The myth
Heimdall is the watchman of the gods. He lives in Himinbjörg beside the rainbow bridge Bifröst and guards the crossing against the giants. Snorri says he needs less sleep than a bird, sees a hundred leagues by night or day, and hears the grass growing in the earth and the wool on sheep. Called the white god, he has golden teeth and was born of nine mothers. He keeps the Gjallarhorn, which he will sound at the start of Ragnarök, when he and Loki will kill each other. In Rígsþula, under the name Ríg, he fathers the ranks of society.
