The myth
The fylgja, the follower, is a spirit that accompanies each person in Norse belief. In the sagas it usually appears in dreams as an animal matching its owner's character: a bear for a strong chieftain, a fox for a cunning one. It was said to walk ahead of the person, and seeing one's own fylgja while awake was a sign of approaching death. There was also the ættarfylgja, a protective female spirit tied to the family and passed down the generations. In modern Icelandic, fylgja also means the afterbirth.
Why it has this power
A level 3 Common with ATK 800 and DEF 1000: a spirit that protects more than it attacks. Light element, for the guardian who walks ahead, under Sun and Fox, the constellation of shapeshifters. As a Spirit it grows with the Seiðr Staff.
Did you know
In the sagas, dreaming of animals fighting could mean that the fylgjur of two rival men were clashing.
