The myth
This rite is a MYTHENOR creation built from real elements. Mount Kurama has been revered for over a thousand years: by its own tradition Kurama-dera temple was founded in the late eighth century, and its trails pass through the Sōjōgadani valley, where legend says young Ushiwakamaru trained with the tengu. In Japan, climbing the sacred mountain is itself a religious practice: Shugendō ascetics enter the mountains to die symbolically and be reborn purified. The card imagines a rite in which a servant, an ascetic and a lordless warrior climb together and call the king of the mountain.
Why it has this power
A Common ritual: sacrifice the Karasu-tengu Scout, the Sacred-Mountain Yamabushi and the Tōkaidō Road Ronin to summon Sōjōbō, King of the Tengu. These are the three paths to the summit: serving, meditating and seeking a master. The archipelago's cheapest ritual calls one of its strongest Birds.

Every October the village of Kurama holds its Fire Festival, in which residents carry enormous torches through the narrow streets to Yuki Shrine.
