The myth

The Yata no Kagami, the "eight-span mirror", is one of the three sacred treasures of the Japanese imperial house, alongside the jewel Yasakani no Magatama and the sword Kusanagi. In the heavenly cave myth, the gods hung it on a sakaki tree before Ama-no-Iwato; when Amaterasu peeked out, she saw her own radiance reflected, drew closer and was pulled out. Sending her grandson Ninigi to earth, she gave him the mirror as if it were her own soul. By tradition it is kept at the Inner Shrine of Ise, and no one outside the priesthood sees it.

Why it has this power

A Common spell that reveals the opponent's hand and all their face-down cards. It is the mirror that drew the sun out of darkness by showing the truth, and in the duel it does the same: nothing stays hidden. An information card, wiser than violent, perfect for dodging traps.

Did you know

Many Shinto shrines keep a mirror as a sacred object, the shintai, in which the kami becomes present, a legacy of this story.
