The myth
A lightning-driven karakuri is a MYTHENOR creation. Edo-period automata ran on springs, weights and gears, not electricity. Yet electricity reached Japan as a curiosity in the same era. The inventor Hiraga Gennai repaired a Dutch static-electricity machine, the erekiteru, and began showing off its sparks as a wonder. In the nineteenth century Tanaka Hisashige, nicknamed Karakuri Giemon, built astonishing dolls and clocks and later founded one of the companies that became Toshiba. The card joins both worlds, gear and spark.
Why it has this power
A Common level-3 Thunder Machine with 1100 ATK and 1000 DEF: an unstable contraption, stronger than it looks. Wisp is the blue spark in the gears; Hammer, the workshop. It is a possible material to fuse with the Tanuki and create the Bunbuku Chagama kettle.
Did you know
Hiraga Gennai is also remembered for a famous marketing idea: he supposedly advised a seller to promote eel on the summer day of the ox, a custom that lasts to this day.
