The myth

Shuten-dōji, "the sake-drinking boy", is the king of the oni in the medieval legend of Mount Ōe near Kyoto. With his band he abducted maidens from the capital and devoured them. The emperor sent the warrior Minamoto no Raikō and his four companions, among them Watanabe no Tsuna and Sakata no Kintoki. Disguised as mountain monks, they received from three gods a magic sake, poison to demons and medicine to men. Shuten-dōji drank, fell asleep and was beheaded; in the tale the head still flew up and tried to bite Raikō. The legend was painted on scrolls and told in Noh and kabuki.

Why it has this power
