The myth

The shinobi, now called ninja, were agents specialized in espionage, sabotage and surprise attacks, above all in the Sengoku period. The mountainous regions of Iga and Kōka, near Kyoto, became famous for their autonomous communities of warriors trained in these arts. In 1581 Oda Nobunaga invaded and devastated Iga, and many of its men went to serve other lords, such as Tokugawa Ieyasu, protected by Hattori Hanzō. Over time plays and prints turned the ninja into an almost magical figure, able to vanish in a puff of smoke or walk on water.

Why it has this power

An Uncommon level-5 Darkness Warrior with 1600 ATK and 1100 DEF: he strikes from the shadows and avoids open fights, hence his low defense. Darkness and Moon are the night he works in; Hammer, the warrior. He pairs with the archipelago's Iga cards, such as the Paralyzing Mist and the Shinobi Ambush.

Did you know

The ninja's black outfit comes largely from theater: in kabuki, stagehands wore black to be "invisible", and the look passed on to ninja characters.
