The myth
Arachne was a young woman of Lydia, daughter of a purple dyer, so famous for her weaving that nymphs came to watch. In the Metamorphoses she denies that her art comes from Athena and challenges the goddess. Athena appears disguised as an old woman and advises humility; Arachne refuses, and the two weave. Athena depicts the gods in majesty and the punishments of arrogant mortals; Arachne weaves the gods' amorous deceptions, flawlessly. Enraged, Athena tears the tapestry and strikes her with the shuttle; Arachne hangs herself, and the goddess turns her into a spider.
Why it has this power
An Uncommon level-5 card with 1700 ATK and 1400 DEF: a daring weaver who attacks better than she defends, like one who challenged a goddess. A Darkness Insect-Plant for the curse that made her a spider, she bears the Moon and Scarab constellations of the night web and transformation.
Did you know
Arachne means spider in Greek, which is why spiders and their relatives are called arachnids.
