The myth
There is no named lion of Lycia in Greek myth: the card is a MYTHENOR creation. It grows out of the Chimera, the monster Homer describes in the Iliad as lion in front, serpent behind and goat in the middle, breathing terrible fire, which lived in Lycia in what is now southwestern Turkey. Lions still roamed Greece and Asia Minor in antiquity; Herodotus says they attacked the camels of the Persian army in Macedonia. The lion appears in many myths as a test of strength, from the Nemean Lion to the lion of Cithaeron.
Why it has this power
A Common level-3 card with 1200 ATK and 1000 DEF: a good attack for its level, a young predator. A Fire Beast like the Chimera's breath, it bears the Sun and Bull constellations. Its main role is fusion: Lycian Lion plus any Serpent yields the Chimera of Lycia, a Rare with 2300 attack.
Did you know
Lycia has a Mount Chimaera where natural gas burns in flames that never go out, and ancient writers linked it to the monster.
