The myth

The Colchian Dragon was the serpent that never slept, guarding the Golden Fleece that hung from an oak in the grove of Ares, in the realm of King Aeetes. When Jason arrived with the Argonauts, it was Medea, the king's daughter and a priestess of Hecate, who faced it: in the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes she sings spells and sprinkles herbs into the beast's eyes until sleep overcomes it, and Jason takes the fleece. In another tradition Jason kills it. Apollodorus also describes the ever-wakeful dragon.

Why it has this power

An Uncommon level-6 card with 1900 ATK and 2100 DEF: defense above attack makes it a guardian, not a hunter. An Earth Dragon bound to the oak and the grove, it bears the Sun and Leviathan constellations, the gleam of the fleece and the coiled serpent. Only magic like Medea's can move it out of the way.

A cup painted by Douris, now in the Vatican Museums, shows Jason being disgorged from the dragon's mouth, a version that survives in no text.
