The Solar Barque of Millions of Years

The myth

The solar barque is one of the central images of Egyptian religion. Ra crossed the sky by day in his barque and at night descended into the underworld in a barque that also carried the souls of the dead to the Field of Reeds. There Apophis attacked it, and the gods on board, helped by the justified dead, drove him back. The Book of the Dead had chapters so the dead could enter Ra's barque and use the boats of sunrise and sunset. The phrase millions of years appears in hymns and funerary texts as an image of eternity.
