The myth
Huitzilopochtli, “Hummingbird of the South” or “Left-Handed Hummingbird,” is the patron god of the Mexica, lord of war and the sun. He guided the people from Aztlán to the lake where they founded Tenochtitlan. The myth of his birth on Coatepec hill is central: his mother Coatlicue conceived from a ball of feathers, and his sister Coyolxauhqui, with the four hundred Huitznahua, resolved to kill her. Huitzilopochtli was born fully armed with the xiuhcoatl, beheaded Coyolxauhqui and scattered his brothers. He was worshipped in the southern shrine of the Templo Mayor.
