The myth

The maguey, metl in Nahuatl, was one of Mesoamerica’s most useful plants: its leaves gave fiber for rope and cloth, its spines served as needles and for blood self-sacrifice, and its sweet sap, aguamiel, fermented into pulque. A myth tells that Ehécatl brought the young Mayahuel down from the sky to earth; the tzitzimime tore her apart, and from her bones, buried by the wind god, grew the first maguey. Mayahuel became the plant’s goddess. Agave remains central to life in Mexico.

Why it has this power

A Level 3 Common with 500 ATK and 1100 DEF: thorns outside, sweetness within — it barely attacks, but it holds firm. Earth is the field; Sun and Scarab, the heat and the plant’s life cycle. It is a material for the Rite of the Serpent Skirt, which calls Coatlicue, and with the Rabbit of the Moon it forms the Four Hundred Rabbits.

The word “mezcal” comes from Nahuatl mexcalli, “cooked maguey.”
