The myth
The calmecac was the school for children of the nobility and future priests. Discipline was strict: students fasted, did penance and hard labor, learned to read and paint codices, count the calendar and recite songs and speeches. Priests rose at night to offer copal incense, sound conch trumpets and make offerings at set hours, since human effort was believed to help keep the sun and cosmos on course. The young apprentice on this card is a generic figure created by the game.
Why it has this power
A Level 3 Common with 900 ATK and 1000 DEF: not a warrior, a student. Light and Sun are the star he helps awaken; Fox, the sharpness of a scholar. As a Spellcaster, he gains +700 from the Ritual Turquoise Mask, which turns an apprentice into the voice of the gods.
Did you know
The calmecac stood near the Templo Mayor and trained mainly the sons of nobles, but according to Sahagún commoners were sometimes admitted too, to become priests.
