The myth

The helhest, Hel-horse, is a spectre of Danish folklore. According to legend it is a black three-legged horse, sometimes headless, the ghost of an animal buried alive in a new churchyard before any person, to guard the ground. Whoever saw or heard it knew that plague and death would follow. The image connects with an older idea: in Norse belief the dead rode on horseback to the realm of Hel, the helreið, the ride to Hel. The Norwegian sculptor Gunnar Utsond portrayed that journey in his sculpture group Helfærd in Oslo.

Why it has this power

A level 5 Uncommon with ATK 1600 and DEF 1200: an omen that arrives quickly and does not linger. A Darkness Undead, under Moon and Scarab. With the Draugr and the Naglfar Oarsman, it is a material for the Rite of the Gjallar Bridge, the ride that calls Hel, queen of the dead.

Did you know

According to legend, every new churchyard first received a horse buried alive, so that the helhest, not a human, would guard the ground.
