The myth
The onmyōji's mirror is a MYTHENOR creation. It joins two real ideas. The first is the power of the mirror: in Japan mirrors have held religious meaning since antiquity, for they reflect all things; they serve as the kami's dwelling in shrines and, in popular belief, also reveal and repel evil. The second is the tales of yin-yang masters who not only detected spells but turned them back on their casters. In the stories of Abe no Seimei, he uncovers hidden curses and sends them back, unmasking the rival sorcerer.
Why it has this power
A Common trap that reflects the attack's damage back to the opponent. The blow strikes the mirror and returns home, just like a spell sent back to its caster. The stronger the attacker, the more it hurts its owner, which makes it dangerous against high-attack monsters.
Did you know
Ancient bronze mirrors, many from China, have been found in Japanese tombs of the third to sixth centuries, placed beside the dead.
