The myth

The Ryōgoku fireworks in Edo, today's Tokyo, are the origin of the Sumida River Fireworks Festival. According to the festival committee, in 1732 a great famine and epidemics killed many people. The following year, 1733, after a rite to the water kami sponsored by Yoshimune's shogunate, restaurants near Ryōgoku bridge were allowed to launch fireworks in memory of the dead and to drive away disease. The "Ryōgoku no kawabiraki", the opening of the river, became an annual festival, with the fireworks houses Kagiya and Tamaya competing for the crowd's admiration.

Why it has this power

A Common spell that deals 500 direct damage to the opponent. The fireworks were born as a tribute and a remedy against evil, and in the duel they become fire falling from the sky onto the opponent's field. It relies on no monster: just light the fuse and look up.

Did you know

To this day Japanese crowds shout "Tamaya!" and "Kagiya!" when a beautiful firework bursts, remembering the two rival houses of Edo.
