The myth
The jorōgumo, "courtesan spider" or "entangling spider", is a spider yōkai that takes the form of a beautiful woman to lure men and bind them in her threads. A spider that lives many years, sometimes four hundred, is said to gain this power. Toriyama Sekien portrayed her in 1776 as a spider-woman handling small fire-breathing spiders. Edo-period tales tell of travelers who accept hospitality in a house in the woods and wake up wrapped in web. Jorōgumo is also the name of a real, large and colorful spider common in Japan.
Why it has this power
A Common level-3 Darkness Insect-Plant with 1100 ATK and 900 DEF: still young, but already dangerous. Darkness and Moon are the night woods; Scarab, the constellation of crawling things and the dead. Fused with a Spellcaster she matures into the Lady of the Waterfall, and she is one of the materials of the Rite of Mount Mikami.
