The myth

The rokurokubi is a yōkai who by day looks like an ordinary person, usually a woman, but by night stretches her neck to impossible lengths, peering through houses or licking the oil from lamps. Often the person has no idea what she does while asleep. A variant, the nukekubi, has a head that detaches from the body entirely and flies. Lafcadio Hearn retold in Kwaidan the story of the monk Kwairyō, a former samurai who, in a mountain hut, discovers a group of nukekubi and survives by hiding one of their bodies.
