The myth

Yatagarasu is the great crow sent from heaven to guide Kamu-Yamato-Iwarebiko, the future Emperor Jimmu, on his eastern campaign. In the Kojiki it was sent by the deity Takagi; in the Nihon Shoki, by Amaterasu. The crow led the prince through the mountains of Kumano to Yamato, where he would found the imperial line. A later tradition identifies the crow with the ancestor of the Kamo clan. The image of the three-legged crow, tied to the sun in Chinese art, later merged with Yatagarasu, today the emblem of the Kumano shrines.

Why it has this power

An Uncommon level-5 Fire Bird with 1700 ATK and 1400 DEF: a solar messenger, more guide than warrior. Fire and the Sun constellation come from the crow that lives in the sun; Crown recalls the emperor it guided. In the celestial cycle Sun beats Moon, ideal against night yōkai.

Did you know

Neither the Kojiki nor the Nihon Shoki says Yatagarasu had three legs; that detail came later, and today the crow appears on the emblem of Japan's national football team.
