The myth

Ryūjin, the "dragon god", is the lord of the sea in Japanese folklore, often identified with Watatsumi, the ocean kami named in the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki. He lives in a palace at the bottom of the sea, Ryūgū-jō, and keeps the jewels that make the tide rise and fall. In the myth, the sea god gives these jewels to Prince Hoori, who marries his daughter Toyotamahime. Fishermen still ask him for calm seas and good catches, and he is linked to rain and the water kami. His image blends the Chinese dragon with Japan's ancient water serpent.

Why it has this power

A Legendary level-10 Water Dragon with 3500 ATK and 3000 DEF: the ocean itself in creature form. His Moon and Leviathan constellations recall the tides, which obey the moon and his jewels. He is an ancient rhyme: Otohime, princess of the palace, and the Turtle that carries visitors there fuse to call forth the king of the sea.

Did you know

In the Kojiki, the jewels received at the sea palace let Prince Hoori drown and then rescue the brother who had humiliated him.
