The myth
The Templo Mayor, Huey Teocalli, was the religious center of Tenochtitlan and the Mexica world. Atop the pyramid stood two shrines: to the south, Huitzilopochtli’s, god of sun and war; to the north, Tláloc’s, god of rain — war and agriculture, the pillars of the empire. The temple represented Coatepec hill, where Huitzilopochtli was born. It was enlarged in seven major stages and destroyed after the conquest in 1521. According to the World History Encyclopedia, at the equinox the sun rose exactly between the two shrines.
Why it has this power
An Epic field: your Serpent and Bird monsters gain +500, and Darkness monsters lose 400. The sun rises between the two shrines and darkness retreats. It strengthens the Feathered Serpent, Xiuhcóatl, eagles and hummingbirds, and weakens creatures of night like Tezcatlipoca and Mictlantecuhtli — careful if your deck runs Darkness.
Did you know
Parts of the Templo Mayor had been dug in the early twentieth century, but only the discovery of the Coyolxauhqui stone in 1978 led to the systematic excavation of the ruins.
