The myth
The tzitzimime (singular tzitzimitl) were star beings, mostly female, who dwelt in the darkness of the sky. The Mexica feared they would descend to devour humanity whenever the sun failed: during eclipses, on the five empty days at year’s end and, above all, on the night of the New Fire Ceremony every 52 years. They were shown with fleshless faces, claws and rattling skirts. Itzpapálotl was held to be their chief. Even so, the sources also credit them with a beneficial side linked to healing.
Why it has this power
A Level 6 Rare with 2250 ATK and 1900 DEF: an end-of-the-world threat in monster form. Darkness and Moon are the sunless night they await; Scarab, death descending. It pairs with The End of the Fifth Sun, the epic spell that destroys all of the opponent’s monsters — the very fear they embody.
Did you know
During eclipses, the Mexica made noise and pregnant women took protective measures, fearing the tzitzimime would descend.
