The myth

Tonatiuh is the sun god of the present age, the Fifth Sun, called Nahui Ollin, “4 Movement.” He was born from Nanahuatzin’s sacrifice at Teotihuacan, but at first he stood still in the sky; he only moved after the gods offered themselves and Ehécatl blew. For the Mexica the sun still needed strength: warriors fallen in battle escorted it from dawn to noon, and women who died in childbirth from noon to sunset. There is no sun dragon in the myths; the game gives that help a body.

Why it has this power

A Level 5 Uncommon with 1900 ATK and 1700 DEF: the strongest of the Uncommon dragons, since it pushes the sun itself. Light is its element; Sun and Crown show the king of stars whom the Mexica served like a sovereign. A reliable mid-duel piece, firm on both attack and defense.

Did you know

Tonatiuh was also called Cuauhtlehuanitl, “ascending eagle,” since the eagle was the emblem of the rising sun.
