The myth

Popocatépetl means “smoking mountain” in Nahuatl. Together with its neighbor Iztaccíhuatl, it dominates the skyline of the Valley of Mexico. In Mesoamerican thought, great mountains were sacred beings, homes of the tlaloque who keep water and clouds; offerings were brought there to ask for rain. The devotion is still alive: communities in the region still climb its slopes with offerings for the volcano, which they affectionately call Don Goyo. The game imagines the mountain’s smoke as the breath of a sleeping dragon.

Why it has this power

A Level 4 Common with 1300 ATK and 1000 DEF: the heat of a still-young volcano in your deck. Fire is the lava; Sun and Crown recall the summit that touches the sky and reigns over the valley. It is a solid early attacker, with the highest ATK among this mythology’s Common dragons.

Did you know

The Mexica held that mountain water came from inside the mountains, so Popocatépetl was also seen as a source of rain, not only of fire.
